My father's family got over emotional with pets. It was overdone and not normal. they overdid it to the point where Dad developed a love/hate relationship for our pets. During my childhood we had numerous pets. I once observed Dad throwing a 16" softball with a lot on it at a stray cat on our backyard fence. He was always hard on us about feeding the animals.
