Laughing all the way to the bank is a common phrase. In this case it was to my cherry red 1962 Corvette. I stacked and stuffed the approximate $1,000 worth of variety of vinyl albums wherever they would fit. They were piled high in the trunk and passenger seat. There must have been 200 of them. I would have to be careful driving home. "Poor Flagg," I said to myself , choking between the laughter. "Poor Flagg!" He had gotten the short shuffle again.

"They aren't marked?" John asked, while taking them roughly from my hand. A standard question.
"Yeah, sure Flagg!" I said. They weren't
"Well, let's get to it!" he said. That was my cue ti go to work.

" Uh, oh, customer!" Flagg said, getting up with a start, moving quickly and nimbly for a teenager his size.

"The cards! The cards!" He said anxiously while extending his right arm, palm open, face up. He was right of course; I always carried a deck with me except when I was in the shower. You never knew when you could get a game up. I put the bills in my right front pocket.
I reached into the back left-hand pocket of my levis and pulled out a relatively new deck of Bee playing cards- the best money could buy at a drug store.

"I know! I know! Forget the 80!" He said emphatically as he pulled out his wallet, thrusting it open, yanking out the obviously pre-counted bills and shoving them towards me.
"You don't have to count it!" he said
"All right!' I said, afraid I wasn't going to get it.I grabbed the bills.
"Well?" he said
"Well what?" I said, preferring to take one step at a time. I didn't want to frighten him away.

I walked in the Record Store on one of the main streets in Crowsville at approximately seven o'clock right after dinner.
There was a small bell attached to the front door, which rang as I entered. Flagg was behind the counter.
"What's going on?" he asked, as he came out from behind the counter, (records were everywhere, even on the walls.)

I was beating the hell out of John Flagg in the game of poker in the lunchroom of Crowsville High on a daily basis when things got out of hand. I had him in the hole $53.80 at the end of a lunch hour when he declared he didn't have the money! I became infuriated and began to put pressure on the 6'2" squarely built teenager who was solid as a block of concrete, his fingers and wrists loaded with jewelry, his fave full, hair cut short. He finally capitulated after a little haggling and agreed to pay me at the Crowsville Record Store where he worked part-time at night.

I was soon banned from gambling in the family house although I'd often ignore the rule. I wasn't discouraged from gambling outside of it. I played with anyone who wanted to play. I soon picked up cheating habits out of Scarnes book that informed readers of ways to protect the honest gambler, and I wasn't an honest gambler most of the time. Money started to roll my way along with merchandise that came in such varieties as watches, rare coins, bicycles, and clothes right of a student's back.

At the sprawling summer home of my grandparents in Sister Bay, Wisconsin, again on my fathers side of the family. I became intrigued by the money that could be had from the sheer luck of a win over my fellow peers just down the shoreline. I remember running through the dark dense woods of birch and pine, which separated the summer homes, elated beyond words, understanding I personally had something to do with the $12.50 win.

It wasn't until my sixteenth year in the summer of 1965 that tangible symptoms began to appear. I somehow became drawn to gambling. I was first exposed to it at my grandparents' house on my father's side of the family. Every major holiday there would be a poker game in the downstairs bedroom of the spacious suburban home just a mile away from Crowsville. I was, of course, too young to play. My begging to get into the game was just ignored.

My high school friends were my partners in crime. High school was a drag and my best grades were C's and D's. I looked forward to gym class. There were girlfriends and only one puppy love, but it didn't last long. There was, of course music, and I loved rock and roll, and the blues got me started--like the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Muddy Waters and Albert King. Then, there were the Kinks, the Birds, Country Joe and the fish, the Grateful Dead and the Mamas and Papas.

After high school I found work as a factory worker, which lasted about two months before I was fired, for what reason I never knew! I tried tree tree trimming for awhile and got good at it, but the boss was a crook who gave me a ten-cent raise an hour after a year. He had given me the impression that I could look forward to $1.00 or more. Forget him!
