I started pawing my way through the crowd with my paperwork safely in my back pocket. Having reached the van on the drivers side, I continued to push and shove until I was on the passenger side. I opened the door, climbed in the seat and slammed the door behind me all in one fluid motion that seemed to add righteousness and meaning to the move.
I quickly pulled out my work referral and handed it to the driver, who unbeknownst to me was the company owner. He took it, shifted into gear and began to divide the throng of surprised and disappointed men. We rode off into the clear mourning sunrise. I was employed and had a future; I would make it yet, and I smiled to myself.
